4th November 2010 1.00pm – 9:00pm

The last in the series of Filmarmalade Presents Lil Joeʼs, 9/11, Porn,Yanks and Murder… was a screening of four films by the artist Miranda Whall:
ʻSamuel and Iʼ, ʻSimon and Iʼ, ʻLadybirdsʼ and ʻCténophores ma chérie [My Darling Comb Jelly]ʼ.

Whall’s films typically depict a series of self-portraits engaged in autoerotic activity, whilst seemingly unaware of a series of large birds, fish and cats that float, perch or mull around the white background that surrounds them. Her animations defamiliarise our relation to watching these intimate moments by juxtaposing knowingly quaint watercolour renderings of scenes of female masturbation with wildlife.

Throughout the day, between 1.00pm and 6.00pm, IMT screened Whallʼs latest film work, ʻCténophores ma chérie [My Darling Comb Jelly]ʼ followed, from 6pm, by Whallʼs three earlier works ʻSamuel and Iʼ, ʻSimon and Iʼ and ʻLadybirdsʼ. After the screenings there was a round table discussion with the artist, the curator Richard Higlett and Gordon Shrigley, founder of Filmarmalade.

Miranda Whall recently exhibited work at the Gimpel Fils Gallery, London, the Skol Gallery, Montreal, the Vane Gallery, Newcastle, the Schuster Gallery, Berlin and at the Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo. She was born in the United Kingdom and lives and works in Aberystwyth.

Filmarmalade is an artists run project established to publish on DVD selected artistsʼ films and video works, so as to encourage a wider access to the moving image and to allow a greater understanding, through specially commissioned interviews of how each artist situates their work, in relation to the history of art and contemporary fine art practice.
